François Delarozière

Diplômé de l'école des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, François Delarozière n'a de cesse d'explorer l'univers théâtral sous toutes ses formes et notamment les plus monumentales. En tant que directeur artistique de la compagnie La Machine, il a développé de nombreux projets aussi bien dans le domaine du spectacle de rue que celui de l'aménagement urbain. Le fil conducteur de sa démarche artistique est le mouvement et sa capacité à susciter une émotion chez le spectateur. En cela, il a une conception plus plasticienne que narrative du théâtre de rue.

Créateur de spectacle vivant
Sa dernière création, les Mécaniques Savantes, met en scène un bestiaire mécanique constitué de deux araignées géantes et de machines à effets qui se confrontent à l'échelle urbaine. Ce spectacle a été présenté en exclusivité mondiale en 2008 à Liverpool, capitale culturelle européenne puis au Japon à l'occasion du 150è anniversaire de l'ouverture du port de Yokohama.
François Delarozière a aussi créé la Symphonie Mécanique alliant l'univers de la musique classique et les sonorités mécaniques. Cette pièce philarmotechnique est coécrite avec Mino Malan.
Il a initié et mis en scène « Le Grand Répertoire des Machines de spectacle ». Cette exposition spectacle a été présentée entre 2003 et 2006 à Nantes, Calais, Toulouse, Anvers, Marseille et Paris et a rassemblé plus de 700 000 spectateurs.

Concepteur de machines monumentales
Dans le cadre du projet de réhabilitation de l'Ile de Nantes, il conçoit et réalise, en collaboration avec Pierre Orefice, les Machines de l'Ile dont Le Grand Eléphant inauguré en 2007 est le premier volet avant le Manège des Mondes Marins et l'Arbre aux Hérons.
On retrouve également ce concept de machine de ville animant l'espace urbain avec Le Manège Carré Sénart , conçu comme ambassadeur de la ville nouvelle de Sénart. Ce quatrième manège s'inscrit dans l'univers forain développé lors de la construction du Manège Magique, du Beau Manège et du Manège d'Andréa.

Collaborations et interventions
François Delaroziere a par ailleurs collaboré et dirigé la fabrication de grandes machines de spectacle pour des compagnies de théâtre de rue et d'art dramatique. Notamment avec la compagnie Royal de Luxe : le Géant, le Rhinocéros, le Petit Géant, les Girafes, la Petite Géante et le Grand Eléphant... Il a également mené un projet commun avec Patrick Bouchain pour le réaménagement architectural du Channel, scène nationale de Calais.
Depuis plusieurs années, François Delarozière enseigne au département Scénographie de l'école d'architecture de Nantes. Il donne des conférences à la Sorbonne avec Alexandre Chemetoff ainsi qu'à la Barlett School of London. Enfin, il est intervenu à l'Université de Tours dans le cadre du projet « Musica ex machina ».

La plupart de ces aventures artistiques ont donné naissance à des ouvrages tels le catalogue du Grand Répertoire – Machines de spectacle publié aux Editions Actes Sud, les carnets de croquis (Machines de l'ile, manège carré Sénart, Mécaniques savantes) édités par la Machine.

A graduate of the Marseille Ecole des Beaux-Arts, François Delarozière ceaselessly explores the world of theatre from every angle, especially its most monumental forms. As artistic director of the La Machine company, he has developed numerous projects not only in the realm of street shows but also in that of urban planning. The guiding light of his artistic approach is movement, and its capacity to bring about emotion in the spectator. In this regard his concept of street theatre gives him more the role of a visual artist than that of a narrator.

A Creator of Live Performance
His last creation, Mécanique Savantes, faces off a mechanical bestiary of two giant spiders together with effects machines, staged on the urban scale. This performance was presented in a world premier in 2008 in Liverpool, then the elected European Capital of Culture, then in Japan for the 150th anniversary of the Yokohama port being opened to the world.
François Delarozière also created the Symphonie Mécanique, combining the world of classical music with mechanical sonorities. This philhar-technical piece was co-written with Mino Malan.
He initiated and staged "Le Grand Répertoire des Machines", a performance exhibition presented between 2003 and 2006 in Nantes, Calais, Toulouse, Antwerp, Marseille and Paris, drawing over 700,000 spectators.

Creative Designer of Monumental Machines
In connection with the Ile de Nantes urban rehabilitation project and in collaboration with Pierre Orefice, he has conceived and created the Machines de l'Ile. The Grande Eléphant, or Great Elephant, inaugurated in 2007, was part of the first chapter in this adventure, to be followed by the Manège des Mondes Marins and the Arbre aux Hérons.
It was once again this same concept of urban machine bringing city spaces to life that was behind Le Manège Carré Sénart, designed to be an ambassador for the new town of Sénart. This fourth carousel follows in the renewal of fairground forms developed with the construction of the Manège Magique, the Beau Manège and the Manège d'Andréa.

Collaborations and Lectures
In addition, François Delarozière has collaborated on and directed the making of large performance machines for other street and dramatic art theatre companies, in particular with the Royal de Luxe company: the Giant, the Rhinoceros, the Little Giant, the Giraffes, the LIttle Giantess, etc.
He also worked with Patrick Bouchain on a joint project for the architectural urban redevelopment of The Channel, the French national theatre of Calais.
For several years François Delarozière has taught with the stage design department of the Nantes Ecole Nationale Supérieur d'Architecture. He lectures at the Sorbonne with Alexandre Chemetoff, as well as at the Bartlett Architectural School at the University College London. Last, he played an active role in the Université de Tours "Musica Ex Machina" project.

Most of these artistic adventures have brought into being books such as "Le Grand Répertoire des Machines – Machines de Spectacle" ("The Great Machine Repertory – Machines for Theatre Perforamance") and "Carnets de Croquis et Réalisations" ("Sketchbooks and Productions"), published by Editions Actes Sud; La Machine has also published other sketchbooks: "Les Machines de l'Ile, le Manège Carré Sénart, Les Mécaniques Savantes" ("The Ile de Nantes Machines, the Carré Sénart Carousel, the Performing Mechanical Devices").
